Before setting off – Ask yourself if the journey is necessary.
Allow enough time to fully de-ice your car. If the weather is very bad, either consider alternative modes of transport or postpone the trip until the conditions are more favourable. Check the forecasts to inform yourself fully of what you might expect to encounter.
Plan your route to use major roads where possible, as they stand a better chance of having been gritted. Little used shady back roads are much more likely to be hazardous than well used larger roads.
If conditions are bad and you have to make the journey, inform someone of your plans and destination.
